Switzerland has a high quality system of education that is relatively accessible to foreign students. The student population of some universities, for example, consists of over 40% foreign students, and this trend is on the upswing. Swiss universities enjoy a high reputation and attract far more foreign students than any other OECD country. Many more foreigners take advantage of exchange programmes to come to Switzerland than young Swiss do to Study Abroad. It is home to the world's largest laboratory, the CERN which is dedicated to the study of particle physics.

Switzerland's higher education system is made up of universities, technical universities and a number of universities of applied sciences which include teacher education programs. Switzerland's higher education institutions have one of the highest rates of international students in the world, representing about 18 percent of its students in recent years. International students are admitted to Swiss universities as long as they have obtained a secondary school program diploma or certificate that is considered equivalent to the Swiss secondary school leaving certificate. International students that do not have the appropriate secondary school qualification can take an entrance exam to qualify for enrollment. International students cannot enroll in medicine, dentistry or veterinarian studies due to a lack of space in these programs.

Switzerland has twelve public universities offering a wide range of first-rate educational opportunities to national and international students. ETH Zurich and EPFL, the two federal institutes of technology, are world leaders in science and engineering education, and research. The ten cantonal (state) universities not only provide comprehensive courses in diverse fields of study, but also conduct cutting-edge research. Scientists in Switzerland produce research of the highest quality worldwide, i.e. with the largest number of citations per publication. So, research-based master's and Ph.D. degrees from a Swiss university offer a good starting point for an academic career.

Since bachelor's level courses are taught in German, French or Italian depending on the school, students should apply only to schools where they are proficient in the language used by that school. All students must have health insurance coverage.

UKTuition for foreign students averaged about 1500 CHF ($1350 US) in 2010 at most universities but was about 8000 CHF ($7000 US) at the Italian university.
